Pack one-tier lunch boxes like bento boxes

A single-tier lunchbox works great if you stop thinking in sandwiches and start thinking in components.

Treat the box like a bento: one grain, one protein, one vegetable. A quinoa bowl with roast chicken and peppers, or rice with tofu and broccoli, piles into a flat box fine. The key is keeping sauces separate until you’re ready to eat. Grab a few small silicone muffin cups or a tiny dressing container - they stop the wet from ruining the dry.

Another solid route is the adult lunchable: a good cheese, some sliced salami or deli meat, crackers, fruit, and a couple of pickles. No reheating, zero assembly, and it still feels like a real meal. Just pack it so sturdy foods sit on the bottom and crumbly stuff goes on top.

Skip anything too wet or messy unless you’ve got a cup for it. And if you own one of those little thermos inserts, a hot soup or stew suddenly becomes the easiest one-tier lunch there is. You’re not stuck; you’re just not a sandwich person.
