Pack the bento like a slot machine, not a food pyramid
The easiest way to get all five food groups into a bento is to treat each compartment like a slot and let your kid help choose what goes in two of them.
The five groups are grains, protein, fruit, veg, and dairy. Most bentos have enough room for that. Grains can be crackers, rice, pasta, or a mini bagel. Protein is chicken, tofu, hard-boiled egg, or beans. Fruit and veg are easy: berries, apple slices, carrots, cucumber, bell pepper strips. Dairy is a cheese stick, yogurt cup, or a small bottle of milk.
If you want them to actually eat it, you need buy-in. Let them pick one thing from each category at the store. Cut veggies into shapes, put dip in the little round cup, and keep portions small — a packed box gets ignored. And don’t overthink variety. A week of carrots and cheese beats a beautiful lunch that comes home untouched.
Not every day needs all five groups either. Aim for balance over the week and celebrate the days they eat two.
Your kid would rather be surprised by fun-shaped sandwiches than impressed by your nutrition spreadsheet.
