Pack the same lunch. It's fine.
Pack the same lunch for your picky kid every single day. That’s the whole trick.
The goal isn’t a nutrition award. It’s getting food into them before the bell rings. A “balanced” lunch that comes home half-eaten is worse than a boring one that actually gets eaten. Kids don’t starve themselves, and they don’t stay stuck on three foods forever — they just do it on their own timeline.
What actually helps:
- Use a bento box or compartments so foods never touch. For a picky eater, a grape that brushed a sandwich is a ruined grape.
- Let them pick the exact brand and cut. If it has to be the Dino nuggets and the star-shaped cheese, so be it.
- Get them involved in packing. Even a four-year-old will eat a lunch they picked out themselves. It’s a weird psychological trick, but it works.
- Add one tiny safe new thing on the side every week or two. Don’t announce it. Don’t negotiate it. Just put it there and ignore it. Sometimes they’ll poke it. Sometimes they won’t. That’s fine.
You’re not a short-order cook and this isn’t a restaurant. Your job is to feed them, not to impress anyone.
