Paint the whole wall, not just the spot.
Don’t try to touch up small patches — you’ll see the difference every time, even with the exact same can of paint.
Paint fades. Even if you saved the original gallon, the wall has been marinating in sunlight, dust, and cleaning solutions for a year. That fresh dab will scream “I’m new” the second it dries. And if you used flat paint? Good luck. Flat sheen spots burnish differently when you brush over them.
The hack that actually works: paint the entire wall from corner to corner. Or at least from one architectural break (like a window frame to the next corner). Blend the edge into the adjacent wall with a slightly damp roller if you’re feeling brave. And always use a roller for the main surface — brushes leave texture that stands out.
But if you absolutely have to touch up — maybe it’s a tiny nick on a rental wall — dab the paint on with a sponge, not a brush. That at least matches the roller stipple.
Otherwise, do it right. Future You will stop noticing the wall every time you walk past.
