Pasta, not popcorn

Packing a lunch for someone with braces comes down to three rules: keep it soft, cut it small, and skip anything crunchy or sticky.

The real enemies are texture extremes. Popcorn, chips, and raw carrots can bend wires or pop brackets off. Sticky stuff like caramel, taffy, and gummy candies pulls at the hardware and is a nightmare to clean. Tough bread and chewy meats are also trouble — think bagels, pizza crust, and jerky.

What actually works is easier than people expect. Pasta salad made from well-cooked noodles, rice bowls with egg or shredded chicken, soft sandwiches, yogurt, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes, bananas, berries, and applesauce all hold up fine in a lunchbox. Soup in a thermos is a great move for the first couple days after a tightening appointment, when everything hurts. Leftovers are your friend — food that’s soft even at room temperature beats a sad cold sandwich.

Cutting things small matters more than you’d think. A sandwich tastes the same in quarters, but it’s way easier on the molars. Same goes for fruit and cooked vegetables. And if you’re packing for a kid, keep in mind that cold, hard things make tender gums worse right after an adjustment, so skip the cold apples and frozen treats that week.

If it crunches or stretches, it’s out.
