The trick is to clean the area well (scrub with a pool brush or a nylon pad if it’s above water, or use a pool-safe cleaner) and dry it as best you can. Cut the patch round (sharp corners peel up) and make it at least an inch bigger than the tear on all sides. Apply the adhesive, press hard, and hold for a minute.
Don’t bother calling a pro for a small tear. They’ll charge you $200 to do the exact same thing. Underwater patches hold fine for years if the liner is in decent shape.
