Peanut-free lunches are easier than you think
Packing a peanut-free lunch isn’t about buying special foods — it’s about reading labels and leaning on whole foods.
Whole foods are your safest bet. Fruit, veggie sticks, cheese, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, and leftover chicken or turkey are naturally peanut-free. Build the lunch around those and you’ve already won half the battle.
For snacks, pretzels, popcorn, rice cakes, fruit leather, and most plain crackers (Ritz, Saltines, Wheat Thins) are peanut-free. If you want a sandwich spread, SunButter or WowButter are solid seed butter substitutes — just warn your kid it tastes different from peanut butter. Hummus with pita is another good option.
Check the label every single time, even for brands you’ve bought before. Companies change recipes and suppliers. And don’t brush off “may contain peanuts” or “made in a facility with peanuts” — if your child’s allergy is severe, treat those like real warnings, not legal CYA.
The real trick is building the label-checking habit until it’s automatic.
