Physical sunscreen wins for acne-prone skin.
Yes. Not because chemical sunscreens are evil, but because physical blockers (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) are less likely to clog pores and irritate active breakouts.
Zinc oxide is anti-inflammatory, which helps calm redness. Chemical sunscreens can sting or trigger reactions in sensitive or acne-prone skin, especially if you’re using actives like retinoids or acids. Physical formulas also sit on top of the skin rather than absorbing, so they’re less likely to get trapped in pores.
The catch: some physical sunscreens feel thick or leave a white cast. Look for “micronized” zinc or tinted versions. If you find a chemical sunscreen that doesn’t break you out, go ahead. But for most people with acne, physical is the safer bet.
