Pick a container, not a rule

The only way to make a “one in, one out” rule work for small kitchen gadgets is to give them a physical home and enforce the limit with that container, not with your willpower.

The problem with most “one in, one out” attempts is that they’re abstract. You tell yourself “I’ll get rid of one before I buy another” and then you buy the avocado slicer and convince yourself you’ll do it later. Later never comes.

Instead, pick a single drawer, a small bin, or a designated shelf in a cabinet—and declare that this is the maximum space for small gadgets. I use a plastic shoebox in my cabinet. When that box is full, nothing new goes in until something old comes out. The box does the thinking for me.
