Pick three things and a tray — that's it.
Decluttering a small nightstand is simple: limit yourself to three essential items and keep them on a tray.
The “three items” rule forces you to think about what you actually use before bed. For most people, that’s your phone, a glass of water, and maybe a book or a lamp remote. That’s it. If you can’t count your nightstand items on one hand, you’ve gone too far.
The tray does two things. First, it creates a visual boundary — anything outside the tray feels like clutter. Second, it makes cleaning dead simple: grab the tray, wipe the surface, put the tray back. No picking up fifty tiny objects.
Don’t overthink the choices. If you have a Kindle, you don’t need a book and a charger and a cord and a reading light. Pick one. The other two slots are for the things you touch every single night. If something sits there for a week untouched, it doesn’t count as essential.
Everything else belongs in the drawer or the trash.
