Most islands with public access have a handful of picnic tables scattered near the ferry docks or main paths. The problem is everybody else has the same idea. By noon on a decent day, every table within sight of the water is claimed, often by groups who packed a full cooler and aren’t leaving anytime soon.

If you’re flexible, the grassy areas or rocky outcrops usually work just as well for eating a sandwich. Bring a picnic blanket and you’re not stuck circling the island looking for a free bench.

The early bird gets the table. Everyone else eats on the ground.
