Pink Floyd’s Abandoned 'Household Objects' Project

The weirdest Pink Floyd album you’ll never hear is a full record made entirely from wine glasses, rubber bands, and ashtrays. In 1974, after The Dark Side of the Moon blew up, the band retreated to a rented house in North London called “Britannia Row” and tried to build an album using only everyday items as instruments. No synthesizers, no drums, no guitars—just the sound of rubbing glass rims, plucking stretched elastic bands, and striking household junk.

The idea was to prove that music could come from anywhere, but the results were a nightmare to record and mix. After months of frustration, they scrapped the entire project and rebuilt “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” using conventional gear. The original Household Objects tapes are reportedly locked in Pink Floyd’s private archive—only a few seconds of wine-glass sounds ever leaked out, used as a fade-in effect on the Wish You Were Here album.
