Pink Floyd's *The Endless River* is Richard Wright's swan song.
Because the album is built almost entirely from leftover keyboard and vocal recordings Wright made during the Division Bell sessions, before he died in 2008. The band (Gilmour and Mason) took those tapes and built a whole album around them as a tribute.
Most of the album is instrumental. There’s only one real song with lyrics (the closing track “Louder Than Words”). Everything else is Wright’s atmospheric, floating keyboard work — the exact sound that made him irreplaceable in Pink Floyd. It’s quiet, ambient, and very much his voice.
It’s not a classic Floyd album. It’s more of a sonic memorial. Gilmour has said directly that it was “for Rick.” The cover art (a single boat on a river) is a nod to the journey to the afterlife. Subtle, but intentional.
It’s worth a listen if you love Wright’s playing. It’s not where you start with Pink Floyd. But it’s a lovely goodbye.
