Plan ahead for restrooms on most small islands.

Yes, you need to plan ahead — the answer is usually no.

If it’s a developed island with a resort, visitor center, or a ferry terminal, you’ll probably find a flush toilet. But if you’re hopping on a ferry to a state park, a nature preserve, or any island that’s “uninhabited,” assume nothing. Many have zero facilities. Some might have a pit toilet that hasn’t been serviced since 2019.

Always check the island’s website or call ahead. Bring your own toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and maybe a lightweight trowel (just in case). Pack out your waste if there’s no trash can.

Better to have it and not need it.
