Portable ice makers don't need a water line

Yes, portable ice makers work fine without a water line — you just pour water into the built-in tank.

The whole point of these things is that they’re countertop self-contained units. You open the lid on top, pour in water, and stop at the fill line (usually visible inside the reservoir). Then plug it in, press the button, and it starts dropping ice in under 10 minutes. No plumbing, no drain, no line.

Some models do offer an optional direct water connection, but that’s the exception, not the rule. The standard setup is manual fill. Just use clean, drinkable water — tap is fine, filtered tastes better because ice picks up flavors. Don’t fill past the max line, and don’t let the water run out while the machine is running, or you’ll risk burning out the pump.

If you’re using it heavily, give the tank a quick rinse every week or two. Other than that, it’s the easiest “instant ice” setup you can own.
