Pry the lid, don't panic

A cooler that’s stuck shut isn’t a broken latch; the cold air inside has contracted and created a weak vacuum.

The seal is just suction. When you chill a sealed cooler, the air inside cools and shrinks, pulling the gasket tight against the lid. It only takes a little breaking of that seal to let air in.

Easiest trick: push down firmly on one corner of the lid while pulling up on the opposite corner. That tilts the lid enough to break the suction. If that doesn’t work, slide the tip of a flathead screwdriver or a butter knife under the lid edge and gently pry up. You’ll hear a small hiss and it’ll open right up. Letting the cooler sit in the sun for a few minutes also works, but that’s the slow path.

If you’re dealing with this in the garage and nothing is handy, press the lid on both sides like you’re trying to bend it slightly. You’re not trying to break anything, just flex the plastic enough to crack the seal.

There’s no reason to wrestle with it. Break the seal, open the cooler, and get your drinks.
