Pulse Earls Court 1994: The Laser Pyramid Safety Setup

The laser pyramid at the 1994 Earls Court Pulse shows wasn’t just for show—it was a carefully engineered hazard. The system used 14 high-powered argon-ion lasers (each around 5–10 watts) to project the band’s name and geometric patterns into the foggy air above the 400-foot stage.

To keep 18,000 pairs of eyes safe per night, the crew installed manual kill switches and motion sensors that cut beams if they drifted toward the crowd. The lasers were also mounted on custom gimbals that limited their sweep angles, and a dedicated safety officer watched the rig from a control booth throughout every performance. No eye injuries were reported across the 14-night run.
