Pure lycra beachwear dies fast. Get a polyester blend.
For beachwear, a polyester blend is the smarter choice if you want it to last more than one summer.
Pure lycra (spandex) gives that amazing, body-hugging fit right out of the box. It stretches and snaps back like nothing else. But it has one fatal flaw: chlorine and saltwater chew through it. So do UV rays and sunscreen chemicals. After a dozen trips to the pool, that snug suit turns saggy and baggy. The elastic literally gives up.
Polyester doesn’t stretch as much on its own, but it’s a tank. It resists chlorine, fading, and general abuse way better. That’s why most quality swimwear is a blend — typically 80% polyester, 20% lycra. You get enough stretch for a good fit, and the polyester keeps the whole thing from turning into a limp rag by August.
If you want something that fits perfectly for one summer and you’re okay replacing it, go high-lycra. If you want it to look decent next year too, go blend.
Your swim trunks will thank you.
