Put a grill mat under your grill

Put a non-flammable grill pad or mat under your grill, keep it at least 10 feet from the house and any railings, and never leave it unattended.

That’s the short answer. The longer one: wooden decks are basically kindling waiting for a spark. Grease drips, falling coals, or a gust of wind can light things up fast.

A good grill mat (usually fiberglass or silicone) catches embers and grease before they hit the wood. I’d also keep a fire extinguisher nearby and clean the grill regularly — built-up grease is what turns a small flare-up into a real problem.

Also, check your local fire code. Some places straight-up ban grilling on wooden decks, or require a certain clearance. Ignoring that could void your insurance.

But honestly? If you’re really worried about fire, just move the grill onto the patio or grass. Wood decks are never truly “safe” with a hot grill on them.
