Put an occlusive on top. That’s the trick.

For subzero wind, the key is finishing with an occlusive layer — something like Vaseline, Aquaphor, or a heavy balm. That’s what actually stops the wind from stripping your skin.

Here’s the order: thin to thick, water-based before oil-based. So: serum (humectant like hyaluronic acid, applied to damp skin), then moisturizer (emollient cream), then the occlusive. The occlusive locks everything in and physically blocks the wind. Without that final layer, the wind just evaporates whatever you put on, and your skin dries out even faster.

Don’t overthink the serums. In subzero wind, one hydrating serum is enough. More layers mean more product that can freeze or pill under a mask. I’d skip anything with niacinamide or actives that sting when it’s cold — irritation is worse when your barrier is already stressed.

One caveat: if you’re wearing sunscreen, apply it between moisturizer and occlusive. But honestly, in a blizzard, UV isn’t the priority.

Keep the routine short and seal it hard. Your face will thank you when it doesn’t feel like sandpaper.
