Put it in the one-year box and set a timer. That’s how you beat 'someday.
The “I might need it someday” mindset is the biggest obstacle in decluttering a small closet, and the fix is a two-step process: a one-year rule box and a five-minute decision timer.
“Someday” is a trap because it never actually arrives. You keep the thing, it takes up space, and in a small closet every inch counts. The one-year box solves this by giving you a physical container (a single box, not a whole shelf) where you put items you’re genuinely unsure about. Seal it, label it with today’s date, and stash it somewhere out of the way – attic, garage, under the bed. If you don’t open that box in one year, you never needed it. Then you donate or toss it without guilt.
The decision timer handles the paralysis. When you pick up an item, give yourself five minutes to decide: keep, box, or go. Most people overthink because they’re afraid of regret. The timer forces a quick gut check. If you can’t decide in five minutes, it goes in the box. That’s the point – you’re not deciding forever, you’re just deferring with a deadline.
