Pyrethroid resistance is obvious if you know the signs
The main sign of mosquito resistance to pyrethroids is that the same spray that used to wipe them out now barely fazes them — you’ll still see mosquitoes landing on treated surfaces or biting after a proper application.
Beyond just noticing more mosquitoes after treatment, there are three specific resistance mechanisms to watch for. Knockdown resistance (kdr) is the most common: it’s a genetic mutation that makes the mosquito’s nervous system less sensitive to pyrethroids. If you catch mosquitoes that seem dazed but recover quickly, that’s kdr. Metabolic resistance is harder to spot but means the mosquito’s enzymes break down the insecticide before it works. Behavioral resistance is when mosquitoes start avoiding treated areas altogether — landing on untreated surfaces, biting earlier in the day, or staying outdoors.
Managing resistance means you cannot rely on pyrethroids alone. Rotate to a different insecticide class (like organophosphates or neonicotinoids) for at least one season. Add synergists like piperonyl butoxide (PBO) to inhibit metabolic enzymes — it often restores efficacy for a while. And pair chemical control with source reduction: dump standing water, use larvicides, and deploy traps. Integrated vector management is the only long-term game that works.
