The DS920+ uses its two M.2 slots for SSD caching only

Four SATA bays plus two NVMe cache slots is the DS920+’s formula. The NVMe drives speed up access to frequently used data but don’t add to your storage pool. Both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drives work in the main bays, giving you flexibility on the storage front.
