“Raving and Drooling” Became “Sheep”: A 1974 Tour Precursor to Pink Floyd’s Animals

On their 1974 French tour, Pink Floyd debuted two extended instrumental jams: “Raving and Drooling” and “You’ve Got to Be Crazy.” Both were eventually reworked and lyrically overhauled for their 1977 album Animals — “Raving and Drooling” became the biting, Orwellian track “Sheep,” while “You’ve Got to Be Crazy” evolved into “Dogs.”

The original live versions of “Raving and Drooling” featured a loose, bluesy groove and minimal lyrics, mostly just the phrase “raving and drooling” repeated. By the time it hit the studio, Roger Waters had sharpened the words into a critique of blind conformity, complete with a reversed Psalm 23 passage. The transformation shows how the band’s live experiments directly shaped their most politically charged record.
