Reef-safe sunscreens work fine — if you apply them right.

Yes. The active ingredients in most reef-safe sunscreens (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) block UV just as effectively as chemical sunscreens. The difference is how they feel and look, not how well they protect.

Mineral sunscreens sit on top of your skin and reflect rays instead of absorbing them. That means they can feel thicker, leave a white cast, and need a little more effort to rub in. But as long as you use enough and reapply, you get the same SPF protection.

The trade-off is cosmetic, not functional. If you hate the texture, you might not apply enough — that’s the real risk. Find a micronized or tinted formula you actually like, and you won’t sacrifice anything.

The “reef-safe” label is mostly marketing for non-nano zinc, but it’s still better for the ocean than oxybenzone or octinoxate. No reason not to switch.
