Rick Wright’s Sailing and Painting Hobbies

Most Pink Floyd fans know Rick Wright as the keyboardist who gave the band its dreamy, atmospheric texture. But outside the studio, he had two consuming passions: sailing and painting. He owned a yacht (often moored in Greece or the Caribbean) and would disappear for weeks at a time, navigating alone or with close friends. The sea gave him the quiet detachment he craved after years of touring and band tension.

Painting was his other private outlet. Wright created abstract works that were never meant to be commercial—he painted for himself, and a few pieces ended up in his homes or given to friends. The visual side of his creativity also surfaced in his interest in architecture and design; he was known to obsess over the layout and lighting of recording studios. These hobbies weren’t side hustles. They were the recharge stations that let him come back to music with fresh ears.
