Rinse saltwater out of your swimsuit immediately.

Do it. As soon as you get out of the ocean, before you even dry off. Salt crystals are basically tiny knives for the fabric — they’ll chew through spandex and fade colors fast.

Cold water only. Hot water sets the salt and breaks down elastic. If you can’t rinse on the beach, at least soak it at home in cool water for 10–15 minutes. Use a tiny bit of mild soap (baby shampoo works) and gently rub. No wringing, no twisting. Lay it flat to dry out of direct sun.

Skip the washing machine if you can. But if you must, use a mesh bag and the delicate cycle with cold water. Never bleach or fabric softener.

Your swimsuit will repay you with an extra season or two.
