Rinse your swimsuit in cold water right after swimming.

Yes, that’s the single most important thing. Chlorine and saltwater are brutal on elastic and spandex. The longer they sit, the faster the fibers break down.

Hand wash with mild soap if you can. If you can’t, at least rinse thoroughly and let it soak in cold water for a few minutes. Never wring it out—roll it in a towel to press out the water instead.

Machine washing and drying will kill a swimsuit fast. The agitator and heat stretch out the elastic and fade colors. Lay it flat in the shade to dry. Direct sunlight is just as bad as the dryer.

Your swimsuit will look good twice as long.
