Robot vacuums and shag carpets don’t mix.

No, most will get stuck or struggle badly.

Deep pile shag is a nightmare for robot vacuums. The long, loose fibers wrap around wheels and brushes. The soft surface confuses cliff sensors, so the robot might stop or spin in place. Even the high-end models with better navigation (like a Roborock S8 or iRobot j9+) can have trouble. They might climb up, get wedged, and error out.

Some brands claim “carpet boost” or “deep carpet detection,” but that’s mostly for low or medium pile. For shag, you’re better off with a manual vacuum with a height-adjustable head. If you really want a robot, get one that can map and avoid the shag area with a no-go zone. But don’t expect it to clean that rug.

Future You will thank you for not having to rescue a beached robot every Tuesday.
