Rolled-up mousepads need a day to flatten.

Yes, the glide is measurably different, and recovery time depends heavily on what the pad is made of.

Cloth pads with rubber or foam bases are the worst offenders. Roll one up for a week and you’ll get bumps and a wavy surface that makes your mouse feel like it’s driving over speed bumps. The foam “remembers” the curl, and the weave can develop creases. Give it about 24 hours laid flat, maybe longer if the pad is thick or the room is cold. Heat speeds it up – put a heavy book on it near a heater.

Hard pads (plastic, glass, or aluminum) don’t care. They’re rigid by nature. Roll one up and it springs back instantly. No recovery time needed.

Hybrid pads – think thin cork or leather – fall somewhere in between. They’ll flatten in a few hours, but the surface might feel slightly off until the material settles.

Bottom line: if you’re storing a cloth pad, lay it flat. Hard pads can be rolled without worry. Your glide shouldn’t be a gamble.
