Ron Wood’s 1979 solo album Gimme Some Neck arrived smack in the middle of his first few years as a full Rolling Stone. The title track is a ragged, pedal-to-floor rocker where Wood hollers for another drink over choppy guitars — Keith Richards sings backup and probably meant every word. The lyrics aren’t subtle: “Gimme some neck / gimme some neck / I’m a man who needs a check / gimme some neck.” It’s a literal demand for booze, a raw nod to the alcohol dependency that would shadow Wood for decades.

The song also reflects the bond and the tensions within the Stones at the time. Wood had replaced Mick Taylor and was still proving himself, but he and Keith had already become drinking and writing partners. The track’s
