Rubbermaid Brilliance is the best bike-commute lunch system
For bike commuting, the best lunch system is a set of Rubbermaid Brilliance containers inside a small insulated bag.
Most lunch boxes marketed for bike commuters are either too bulky, annoyingly heavy, or lie about being leakproof. The Brilliance line doesn’t. The lids click shut with a real seal, so you can toss them in a pannier with your laptop and not worry about salad dressing ending up on your files. They come in a bunch of sizes, stack neatly, and don’t hold onto last week’s curry smell.
The other big win is modularity. Some days you need one big container, some days two small ones. With a fixed lunch box, you’re stuck. With two or three Brilliance containers in a cheap insulated tote (or even just a drybag), you get exactly the space you need. The plastic version is light enough that it won’t add drag, and it survives being knocked around by other things in your backpack.
If you want glass, they make those too, but glass is heavy and slides around in a side pannier. For pedaling, stick with the plastic.
This is not where you need to spend $60 on a fancy bento box. Just get the containers and a bag you already own.
