Rubbermaid Brilliance is the soup-proof answer
The Rubbermaid Brilliance is the best leak-proof lunch container for soup or dressing, and the latches stay tight for years.
It’s the one that actually holds up to the “turn it upside down in your bag” test. The four clamps snap shut with a satisfying click, and the silicone gasket seals the rim completely. I’ve carried soup, salad dressing, and even leftover curry sauce in these without a single spill. The clear plastic also means you can see if the lid is seated properly — no guessing.
On the gasket question: it holds up well, but it’s not magic. Over a couple years of daily use, the silicone will soften and can pick up stains from turmeric or tomato sauce. That’s cosmetic, not a leak problem. The bigger risk is the gasket getting popped out of its groove when you close the lid — then it leaks. Just reseat it and move on. These latches rarely fatigue; the plastic has enough give that they stay snappy.
The catch: it’s not insulated. If you want hot soup at noon, you need a Thermos food jar instead. But for cold dressings, yogurt, or soups you’ll microwave at work, the Brilliance is the pick. It’s cheap, dishwasher safe, and lasts.
Don’t bother with the cheaper latch-lid brands — the gaskets go flat within a year. Rubbermaid also sells replacement gaskets if yours ever goes bad, which tells you everything.
Future you, with vinaigrette in your backpack, says thanks.
