Run your fingers across it. Speed feels slick, control feels grabby.
You can tell by running your fingertips across the pad—speed surfaces feel smooth and almost slippery, while control surfaces have a noticeable texture or drag.
Just drag your palm or fingers over the pad. A speed pad feels like a well-waxed tabletop. A control pad feels more like a fine-grit sandpaper or a soft fabric with a bit of resistance. Some control pads have a rubbery or rougher top layer that literally stops your finger from gliding easily.
If you still can’t tell, try pressing down and dragging your thumb. Speed pads let your thumb slide with almost no friction. Control pads will make your thumb catch slightly, or you’ll feel a woven or bumpy texture.
Trust your hand. It’s usually obvious once you’re not thinking about it.
