Run your pool pump on a timer, not nonstop.
Yes, you can run it intermittently. The goal is total turnover per day (the volume of water that passes through the filter), not constant running. Most pools need about 8–12 hours of pump time in summer, less in cooler months.
The trick is to split that into two or three chunks – say 4 hours in the morning, 4 in the evening. That keeps the water moving and chemicals mixed without running the pump all day. You’ll save electricity and the water quality stays fine as long as the total run time hits your pool’s turnover requirement.
Don’t skip entire days though. Still water breeds algae and bacteria fast, and a day off can mean a green mess that takes way more energy to fix. If you have a variable-speed pump, running longer at lower speed is even more efficient than short bursts on high. But for a standard pump, intermittent is the smart move.
Your pump doesn’t need a marathon, just a few good jogs.
