Run your pump, cover the pool, and kill phosphates.

Yes, you can keep algae away without a chemical bath. It comes down to three things: circulation, sunlight control, and starving the algae.

Algae needs three things to thrive: sunlight, nutrients (phosphates), and still water. Take away any one of those and it dies. Your pool pump is your best friend here. Run it 8–12 hours a day in the summer — longer if it’s hot. Short cycling is the #1 cause of surprise algae blooms. Keep the water moving, especially in corners and steps.

A solar cover isn’t just for heating. It blocks UV light, which algae loves. Also keeps leaves and junk out of the water, so you’re not feeding the problem. Put it on when the pool isn’t in use.

Phosphates are algae food. Most pool stores sell a phosphate remover that’s a one-time treatment after opening, then maybe a boost after heavy rain. That stuff doesn’t require constant chemical dumping. It just binds to the phosphates so algae can’t eat.

If you keep those three things in check, you can run a lower chlorine level (1–3 ppm) and still have a clear pool. Shock only when you see a problem, not every week.

Your pool doesn’t need a chemical bath, just a little discipline.
