Running a box fan on a generator is fine — just don’t be stupid about it.

Running a box fan on a generator is safe, but only if you follow basic generator safety rules.

A box fan draws maybe 50–100 watts. Any generator that can run a fridge or a few lights can handle that easily. The safety concern isn’t the fan — it’s the generator. Carbon monoxide kills people every year because they run generators in garages, basements, or too close to windows. Keep the generator outside, far from doors and windows. Not “sort of outside” — actually outside. And if it’s raining, make sure it’s under some kind of cover that still allows airflow.

Other than that, just use a heavy-duty extension cord that’s rated for the distance. A cheap 100-foot light cord will drop voltage and could cause the fan motor to run hot. Stick to 14-gauge or thicker for longer runs. And don’t daisy-chain extension cords.

That’s it. The fan itself isn’t the problem.

Just put the generator where it belongs and you’ll have cool air without killing your family.
