Sauce cups beat every fancy lunch box

The best way to keep dips and hummus apart in a lunch is a couple of small, leakproof 2-ounce containers—not a lunch box with fancy built-in compartments.

Bento-style boxes with separate compartments look great, but in my experience those little built-in wells are rarely truly sealed. You tip the bag, and hummus finds its way into the grapes. Separate cups solve that because they seal on their own and you can pack them anywhere.

Silicone sauce cups are popular and they pack down flat, but silicone absorbs odors and some leak when tipped. Small stainless steel containers with locking lids are the best I’ve used—no smell, no leaks, no broken plastic. Plastic versions with a clip-down lid work fine too. The locking lid matters more than the material.

If you’re packing for a kid, the Yumbox-style boxes are genuinely sealed and worth it. For everyone else, don’t buy a new box. Buy the cups.
