Scrub, don't just skim
The best way to clean pool steps and corners is a good stiff-bristled pool brush on a pole, worked systematically from the top down.
Chemicals won’t do the job alone. Algae and grime cling to the steps and seam where the wall meets the floor. Brushing loosens it, and the filter or a skimmer can pull it away. Spend a few minutes brushing the steps and corners every few days and you won’t be fighting stubborn black algae later.
For tight corners, a regular brush might not reach. Use a smaller attachment — like a step brush or a nylon corner brush — on the same pole. If there’s loose debris settled in the corners, follow up with a pool vacuum or a leaf net before it sinks in.
Don’t forget to brush toward the main drain or skimmer so the crud actually leaves the pool. And do it weekly at minimum, daily if you use the pool a lot.
Future you doesn’t want to be scraping black algae with a toothbrush.
