Semi-chisel chain for dirty or frozen wood.
Yes, semi-chisel is the right call. Full chisel chain cuts faster but dulls fast when it hits dirt, bark, or ice. If you’re cutting firewood that’s been sitting on the ground, or you’re bucking frozen logs with grit embedded, semi-chisel lasts way longer between sharpenings.
Full chisel has a square-cornered cutter that digs in aggressively. Great for clean, softwood milling. Terrible when you hit a rock or frozen mud. Semi-chisel has a rounded cutter that’s less prone to chipping and handles abuse better. The trade-off is slightly slower cutting, but that’s worth it when you’re not sharpening every two tanks.
If you’re only ever cutting clean, debarked pine, go full chisel. Otherwise, save yourself the headache and run semi-chisel. A dull full chisel is useless; a semi-chisel that’s still sharp enough to cut is worth more than theoretical speed.
