Separate Compartments Are the Whole Solution
Separate Compartments Are the Whole Solution
Packing a lunch for a picky eater who likes plain food is mostly a logistics problem, and separate compartments solve it.
Just get a bento box with dividers. They’re cheap, they’re everywhere, and they do the job. Each separate space keeps the cheese from touching the crackers, which is all your kid actually cares about. If you don’t want to buy one, use silicone muffin cups in a regular lunchbox.
The other secret is to stop fighting the pickiness. Pack the same three or four safe foods every single day. Kids who eat plain foods are usually happier with predictability. Lunch is not the place to introduce a new texture. If they like peas plain, give them peas plain. Cold pizza? Fine.
You can also let them pack it themselves once they’re old enough. Not only does that save you effort, but they’ll actually eat what they packed because they chose it. Just supervise to make sure it’s not all cookies.
Save the food experiments for dinner.
