Separate everything and call it a snack board.

The easiest way to pack a lunch for a kid who hates mixed foods is to treat it like a bento box: everything separate, nothing touching, and each item looking like its own little snack.

Kids eat with their eyes first. If you hand them a sandwich where the filling is already inside, that’s a mixed food — instant rejection. But if you give them bread, cheese, and ham on separate little sections, suddenly it’s a “snack board” and they’ll happily assemble it themselves. Same food, zero fights.

You don’t need a fancy bento box. A regular lunchbox with silicone muffin cups works perfectly. Put each food in its own cup or section. Use cookie cutters to make the bread or cheese into stars and dinosaurs. Add something with a bright color — strawberries, bell pepper strips, blueberries — even if they won’t eat it, it makes the rest look more appealing.

The golden rule: never mix the foods yourself. Let the kid do it. “Deconstructed” isn’t a fancy chef thing, it’s how picky eaters survive. And if they touch the sandwich and decide it’s too scary, at least they ate the cheese and crackers.

Just call it lunch snack time and watch the same food disappear.
