Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band won Album of the Year at the 1968 Grammys.
Yes, that’s the one. The 10th Annual Grammy Awards, held in 1968, honored Sgt. Pepper for the 1967 release. It beat out Francis Albert Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim, It Must Be Him by Vikki Carr, Ode to Billie Joe by Bobbie Gentry, and My Cup Runneth Over by Ed Ames. Not exactly a murderer’s row of competition, but still—Sgt. Pepper deserved it.
It was the first rock album to win the category, which tells you how stuffy the Grammys were back then. But they got this one right.
One of those rare Grammys that actually holds up.
