Shelf riser + appliance garage = countertop sanity

Using a countertop shelf riser and a dedicated appliance garage cabinet is the most effective way to reclaim your counter space in a small kitchen.

Here’s the deal: A shelf riser turns one spot into two vertical levels. Put your daily drivers—coffee maker, toaster, kettle—on the top shelf, and small items like a microwave or knife block underneath. Measure your appliances first so nothing looks smashed. The riser doesn’t hide anything, but it frees up footprint for prep work.

The appliance garage is for the stuff you use once a week or less. Blender, air fryer, stand mixer—things you don’t want to see or dust. A dedicated cabinet with a roll-top door or a swing door near the outlet keeps them accessible but out of sight. Pro tip: install a power strip inside so you can leave things plugged in and just pull them out.

Watch your counter depth. If your counters are shallow, a big riser might overhang and look messy. Stick to around 12 inches deep max. For the garage, make sure the door clears any obstructions.

Do both, and suddenly you have a usable counter again. Your future self will thank you.
