Party added a lot of contaminants — sunscreen, sweat, food, possibly a few unplanned pees. You want to kill all that before it turns into algae or cloudiness. Shocking at night gives the chlorine time to work without the sun burning it off. Just make sure no one swims until chlorine drops back to safe levels (test in the morning). Quick action prevents bigger problems.
