Short trips south and strategic light exposure are your best bets

The two most effective travel strategies for maintaining SAD remission during late-winter trips are keeping the vacation short and heading to lower latitudes, plus carefully timed light exposure during and after the flight.

Shorter trips matter because your circadian system is already in winter mode — it’s clinging to limited daylight. A week or more in the sun resets your clock to a higher-light environment, but when you return you get slapped back into dark winter. That crash can trigger a SAD episode faster than you expect. A long weekend or four days is usually enough to get the benefits without wrecking your adaptation.

Lower latitudes literally give you more photons. Even if it’s cloudy, the sun angle is higher, so the intensity of light hitting your eyes is significantly stronger than up north. That’s what your brain needs to suppress melatonin and stabilize mood.
