Silica gel packets won't fix soggy lunch fruit
Silica gel packets are not the fix here—they’re built for dry goods, not a lunch box full of fresh fruit. They might absorb a little surface moisture, but the condensation you’re seeing is mostly your fruit’s own sweating plus the temperature swing from sealed insulation. The packet is fighting a losing battle.
You’ve got two separate problems wrapped in one. First, fruit releases water vapor as it sits in a sealed, insulated space that stays warmer than the outside. Second, that vapor condenses on the cool walls and drips back onto whatever’s underneath. Silica gel can’t keep up with that cycle, and it definitely won’t dry the fruit that’s already damp.
What actually works: dry your fruit thoroughly before packing—don’t wash it and toss it in dripping. Put it in a separate container, not loose in the bag, and line the bottom with a paper towel to catch the moisture as it settles. If you’re packing anything warm, let it cool completely before sealing. And add a small ice pack, not because fruit needs to be ice cold, but because reducing the temperature difference inside the bag cuts down the condensation rate. Leave the bag slightly unzipped too if you can, so humid air can escape instead of recycling.
Silica gel is for jerky, electronics, and shoe boxes. Your fruit is sweating, not the bag.
Forget the packets, use a paper towel.
