Silicone bags are the best plastic baggie replacement for lunches

Silicone bags are the best reusable swap for wrapping snacks in a lunch box.

They handle everything plastic baggies do — carrot sticks, crackers, sandwiches, sliced fruit — without tearing, leaking, or getting permanently stained by tomatoes. You can toss them in the dishwasher, flip them inside out to dry, and they still seal shut after a year of daily use. That’s more than you can say for most other options.

Beeswax wraps are fine for things like cheese and a half-cut sandwich, but they’re fussy with wet or crumbly snacks. Cloth snack bags are good for dry stuff only. And rigid bento boxes work great if you don’t mind the extra bulk in the lunch bag. Silicone is the sweet spot: flexible enough to squeeze into gaps, sturdy enough to survive the backpack.

One honest catch: they’re not cheap upfront, and some kids struggle to open the seal. Buy a couple of good ones, not a cheap 12-pack. If you lose one, that’s still less plastic in the ground than a roll of baggies.

Your lunchbox will look less sad, too.
