Silicone bags are the honest replacement for Ziplocs

Silicone bags like Stasher are the best all-around swap for single-use plastic lunch bags. Beeswax wraps get all the attention, but they’re really a plastic wrap replacement, not a bag replacement.

Beeswax wraps are great for wrapping a sandwich or covering a bowl. They’re cheap, they work, they smell nice. But they can’t hold wet food, they don’t seal, and they need hand-washing in cool water. Wash them warm and they’re ruined. For a lunchbox that gets tossed around and stuffed in a backpack, that’s a lot of rules.

Silicone bags seal shut, take a beating, and go in the dishwasher. They cost more upfront — Stasher runs $10–15 a bag — but they last for years. That makes them way cheaper than continuously rebuying boxes of Ziplocs. Off-brand silicone bags work fine too if you want to test the system without spending much.

My honest take: if you’re replacing a daily Ziploc habit, get silicone. If you’re just wrapping a sandwich at your desk, beeswax is fine. Most people end up wanting both.

Buy once, stop rebuying plastic bags.
