Silicone lunch bags are worth it — if you actually use them

Silicone lunch bags are worth switching to, but the whole eco payoff depends on you using them for a long time.

The math is actually good: one silicone bag can replace hundreds of disposable plastic bags over its lifetime. Even at $12 a bag, that beats Ziplocs on cost and waste by a mile — as long as it survives and actually gets used.

The catch: silicone isn’t recyclable, and manufacturing it takes real energy. So your first several uses are just paying off the environmental debt. If you buy a set, use them twice, and let them sit in a drawer, you’d have been better off with disposables. That’s the honest test.

Practical downsides: they’re bulkier than disposables, they can trap smells, and they don’t wash themselves. But they’re dishwasher safe, they last for years, and they handle wet and messy food far better than flimsy bags. Good for sandwiches, snacks, fruit, leftovers.

Buy one before you buy a set. If it earns a permanent spot in your rotation, the switch is a no-brainer.
